Bobai Urges Calm, Says Defence Leadership Must Stay Focused on Security Reforms
A Public Affairs Analyst, Victor Mathew Bobai, has called for calm in the public space amid rising political speculation around General Christopher Musa Gwabin. He urged commentators, interest groups, and sections of the media to allow the Defence Chief concentrate fully on ongoing security reforms rather than drawing him into premature political debates.
Addressing journalists in Kaduna, Bobai said the moment demands discipline in public discourse because Nigeria’s security institutions are in an intensive phase of operational review, troop morale strengthening, and inter-agency coordination against terrorism, banditry, and emerging threats.
“This is not the time to politicise security leadership,” Bobai stated. “The armed forces require focus, continuity, and public encouragement. General Musa’s mandate is clear, and the nation benefits more when he is supported to deepen reforms, especially those that improve welfare, motivation, and effectiveness of personnel in the field.”
Security First, Politics Later
Bobai noted that while national conversations about inclusion, equity, and balance of power are legitimate in a democracy, they must not evolve into narratives that distract security managers or create artificial rivalries.
He cautioned against framing the Defence Chief in ways that suggest political positioning, particularly narratives that attempt to set him against Kashim Shettima, describing such angles as “unnecessary and unhelpful.”
He emphasized that decisions about future political configurations remain the constitutional prerogative of Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the appropriate time.
Reward System and Troop Morale
A key part of Bobai’s appeal focused on what he called the “reward system” within ongoing security reforms improved recognition, welfare structures, logistics, and morale for troops confronting daily threats.
According to him, public energy and advocacy should be channeled toward:
1- Better equipment and field support.
2- Welfare packages for injured personnel and families of the fallen.
3- Stronger inter-agency intelligence collaboration.
4- Community support systems that aid military operations.
“If there are resources for media campaigns, let them be used to amplify support for our soldiers and their families,” he said.
Avoiding Heated Rhetoric
Bobai also advised public officials and commentators to exercise restraint in emotionally charged statements that may inflame regional or political interpretations of what should remain a national security conversation.
He referenced how remarks circulating in the public space including those attributed to Hannatu Musawa
Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy of Nigeria ,her postulations can be misconstrued and feed avoidable tension.
Front-Burner National Issues
He linked the call for calm to broader front-burner issues Nigerians are focused on:
1- Sustaining gains against insecurity.
2- Protecting food security ahead of the farming season
3- Economic stability and cost-of-living pressures.
4- Strengthening national unity amid diverse political opinions.
5- Preserving an atmosphere conducive to democratic participation as 2027 approaches.
Bobai argued that overheating the polity through speculative narratives only benefits “conflict entrepreneurs” and distracts from governance outcomes citizens expect.
Commendation for Uba Sani’s Achievements
Bobai also used the opportunity to thank Governor Uba Sani, noting that his performance in office has made the APC increasingly attractive across the North West due to visible governance outcomes, as well as his role as Coordinator of all APC Governors in the North West.
He cited the Governor’s deliberate investment in rural infrastructure, road rehabilitation, and urban renewal projects that have improved connectivity, stimulated local economies, and restored public confidence in government presence at the grassroots.
He further highlighted Uba Sani’s emphasis on social intervention programs, support for vulnerable communities, improved access to education, and healthcare services, describing them as practical policies that directly impact citizens’ lives and help reduce social tension.
He noted that, under Operation Tsafta, over 5,000 women and youths were recently engaged, with an additional 7,000 expected to be gainfully employed within the next three months. He said this initiative will further ease hardship and promote social stability.
Bobai added that the Governor’s inclusive leadership style, bridge-building across diverse communities, and commitment to peace and dialogue have helped stabilize Kaduna’s political environment and positioned the state as a reference point for responsible governance in the region.
A Call for Responsible Conversation
He concluded by urging the media and civic actors to promote responsible dialogue that reinforces unity, supports security institutions, and allows reform processes to mature without political interference.
“Let security leaders remain security leaders. Let political decisions remain with the President. And let Nigerians see visible progress in safety, stability, and governance,” Bobai said.
