CSGG to Senate: Increase Security Funding and Strengthen Defence Minister’s Operational Authority to Defeat Insecurity
Abuja-Nigeria .The Citizens Support for Good Governance (CSGG) has urged the Nigerian Senate to move beyond routine oversight and provide the necessary legislative, financial, and policy support required to enable the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), effectively lead the nation’s fight against insecurity.
In a statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator of CSGG, Dr. Olayinka Olumide Adeosun, and the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Victor Mathew Bobai, the group described the Minister’s appearance before the Senate as a strategic opportunity to build a stronger partnership between the Executive and Legislature in addressing the country’s security challenges.
According to the group, Nigeria’s security situation requires urgent and decisive action backed by adequate resources and institutional support. CSGG called on the Senate to substantially increase funding for defence and security operations, noting that modern warfare and counter-insurgency operations demand advanced surveillance systems, intelligence assets, combat equipment, troop mobility, welfare packages, and continuous training.
“The Armed Forces cannot be expected to deliver maximum results without the resources required to confront increasingly sophisticated criminal and terrorist networks. Security funding should be treated as a national investment rather than an expenditure,” the statement noted.
CSGG further advised the Senate to support measures that would strengthen the operational effectiveness of the Ministry of Defence and enhance coordination among all security agencies. The group emphasized that the Defence Minister should be empowered with the necessary institutional backing to ensure rapid deployment of resources, personnel, and operational support to areas facing severe security threats.
The organization also urged lawmakers to encourage greater collaboration between the military, intelligence services, state governments, and local communities, stressing that security challenges require a unified national response.
While acknowledging the sacrifices of Nigerian troops, CSGG called for increased welfare support, improved operational logistics, and accelerated procurement of modern security technologies to boost the morale and effectiveness of personnel on the frontlines.
The group also warned against the politicization of insecurity by sectional, regional, or partisan interests, arguing that security matters should remain a national concern rather than a platform for political contestation.
CSGG further advised the Defence Minister to present a candid assessment of operational challenges, achievements recorded under his leadership, and areas where legislative intervention can help accelerate progress in the fight against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats.
“The Senate must recognize that defeating insecurity requires more than hearings and resolutions. It requires strategic funding, strong legislative support, policy consistency, and institutional empowerment of those entrusted with protecting the nation,” the statement added.
The group concluded by calling on all stakeholders to rally behind the Armed Forces and security agencies, stating that national unity, adequate funding, and sustained political will remain the most effective tools for restoring peace and stability across Nigeria.

To defeat insecurity, Nigerians must speak with one voice, provide adequate funding to security agencies, reject the politicization of security matters, and support our troops who make daily sacrifices to defend the nation.” :::
